Jim Mann
Jim Mann is Professor in Human Nutrition and Medicine at the University of Otago and Consultant Physician (Endocrinology) in Dunedin Hospital. He is also the Director of the recently established Edgar National Centre for Diabetes Research. His research and clinical work have principally been in the fields of lipids and carbohydrates as they relate to coronary heart disease and diabetes. He has been author and co-author of over 200 papers published in peer reviewed journals and written and edited several textbooks and popular books, most recently the "Essentials of Human Nutrition" (co-edited with Professor Stewart Truswell) the Second Edition of which was published in 2002 by Oxford University. He has been involved with a number of national and international organisations concerned with nutrition and health, including the World Health Organisation. He was the first Chairperson of the Diabetes Study Group of the European Association for the Study of Diabetes and chaired the Food and Nutrition Advisory Committee to the New Zealand Ministry of Health. As Principal Investigator he has been awarded the international Bristol-Myers Squibb/Mead Johnson Unrestricted Grant for Human Nutrition and was the third recipient of the University of Otago Distinguished Research Medal in 2002. He chaired the Cardiovascular HUB Group of the New Zealand Guidelines Group and currently chairs the National Heart Foundation Scientific Committee.
Jenny Reid
Jenny Reid is a New Zealand Registered Dietitian and currently is the Assistant Director of Food Standards at the New Zealand Food Safety Authority. Jenny has worked for the New Zealand Government over the last 14 years and has extensive experience with international and national nutrition policy development and food regulations. Jenny remains actively involved in all aspects of nutrition that feed into food standards development with interests across the broader range of public health nutrition, health claims, fortification and the dissemination of information to the public.
Winsome Parnell
Senior Lecturer Otago University Human Nutrition Department
As lead nutrition researcher for the Children's Nutrition Survey, 2002 Winsome has a particular interest in children's nutrition. She was also involved in the 1997 National Nutrition Survey and her areas of specialty are currently Food and Nutrition Policy and Food Security.
Bernadette Drummond
University of Otago School of Dentistry
As a Senior Lecturer within the Dental School, Bernadette works primarily in the area of pediatric dentistry both teaching and in active specialist practice. She also teaches prevention of dental caries (decay) in all the dental training programmes, in medicine and in the human nutrition programme. She has been involved in research looking at causes of dental caries in children and adolescents, prevention of dental caries and improving dental care for children and adolescents and her current areas of interest are new dental materials for restoring children's teeth, and the effects of dairy foods on protecting teeth from disease.
