Sugar and children’s behaviour
The role of sugar as a factor in children’s behaviour is often debated. While the latest research dates back to the mid 90s it shows there is no clear association between sugar intake and behaviour in childhood. The fact sheet concludes that consumed in moderation as part of a healthy, balanced diet, sugar poses negligible risks to most children and in fact it can have a positive role in helping children eat nutritious foods (breads, cereals, fruits and vegetables) that they may otherwise avoid.

Sugar and dental health
The causes of tooth decay are many. Carbohydrate foods that include sugars do play a role in the development of tooth decay. However, it is the frequency of drinking sweetened drinks and eating carbohydrate containing foods (including sugar) as well as cleaning practices and the use of fluorides that is important. For information on managing tooth decay including ‘top teeth tips’ download the SRAS fact sheet Sugar and dental health.
